New Monitoring Team to Brief City Council

May 30, 2023

Cleveland (May 30, 2023) – Council’s Safety Committee will hear from the new Cleveland Police Consent Decree Monitoring Team at 10 am, Wednesday (5/31).

The members of the team that will be present are: Karl Racine (the new Lead Monitor), Professor Ayesha Bell Hardaway (Deputy Monitor and recently, Interim Monitor), and Stephanie Yonekura, a member of the international law firm Hogan Lovells that was selected as Monitor.

The Monitoring Team is charged with overseeing implementation of the Consent Decree the city entered into with the U.S. Department of Justice and is tasked with helping the Court and City of Cleveland gauge whether the Decree's requirements are taking hold in practice.

“I am pleased that the new team is willing to come in to update Council on the progress,” said Councilman Mike Polensek, chair of the Safety Committee. “I think it’s important for my colleagues and the residents of Cleveland to hear from the Monitor and understand the task at hand.

“I expect to have the Monitoring Team briefing Council at regular intervals.”

The committee hearing is the Mercedes Cotner Committee Room, 217 in City Hall. Residents can watch in the committee room or live on TV20 at www.tv20cleveland.com/watch-now/ or live or later on Council’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/clevelandcitycouncil
