The More Alike Than Different Mural Grows in Ward 16
Oct 10, 2025
Councilman Brian Kazy invites the public to the official unveiling of Phase II of the “More Alike Than Different” mural, celebrating Down syndrome Day in Cleveland. The newly expanded mural continues the project’s mission — to highlight and celebrate individuals with different abilities.
Councilman Kazy, who sponsored Cleveland’s Down syndrome Day in 2015, originally brought together a coalition of local organizations to create the mural that wraps around the corner of Puritas Avenue and West 161st Street. Designed by local artists Garrett Weider and Mike Geeze, the murals were primarily painted by individuals with different abilities. The original 30,000-square-foot mural was unveiled in 2021.
“I want to thank all the organizations that helped make this possible, including Cuyahoga County,” said Councilman Kazy. “This mural adds to the many beautiful murals throughout our city that represent all races, creeds, and nationalities. It shines a light on an underserved and under-recognized community that deserves the same visibility and support as all others.”
In addition to celebrating those with different abilities, organizers hope the mural will help beautify this industrial corridor and discourage graffiti at a corner long affected by tagging.
The “More Alike Than Different” mural will stand as the largest permanent mural of its kind in Ohio — and among the largest in the nation.
