Cleveland City Council Concludes Day Three of 2024 Budget Hearings with Focuses on Violence Prevention and Support for Building & Housing

Cleveland, OH (February 22, 2024) – Council members completed day three of budget hearings. Day four of the scheduled five-day hearings will convene on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 9:00 am.

Council reviewed the budgets of the Department of Public Health, Community Relations Board, Office of Prevention, Intervention, and Opportunity for Youth and Young Adults, Office of Sustainability, Department of Building and Housing, Department of Port Control, and the Department of Public Works.

Members devoted significant time to the Department of Building & Housing, with several demanding the Department add more positions to address the needs of Cleveland residents, property owners, and businesses. Councilman Anthony Hairston, Chair of Council’s Development, Planning & Sustainability Committee stated, "We have restored 15 Building and Housing positions and added five more to help improve the inspection and code enforcement needed to maintain and improve our housing stock. The additional positions are a good start, but the work is not done yet. This Council will continue advocating for the people of Cleveland."

Council members posed questions about:

  • Increasing efforts to reduce infant mortality

  • Exploring additional resources to protect our environment

  • Advocating for funding to increase the number of violence interrupters

  • Improving inspections and enforcement by restoring fifteen budgeted positions – and adding five to Department of Building & Housing

  • Improving recreation opportunities by reallocating funding to recreation centers

  • Supporting environmental justice by strengthening our tree canopy

  • Reviewing the significant increases in external, third-party contractors hired by the City

On Friday, Council is scheduled to review budgets for Cleveland Municipal Court, Department of Public Utilities, Office of Equal Opportunity, Departments of Community Development and Economic Opportunity, and the Office of Capital Projects.

Council seeks the feedback and input of community members throughout the budget hearings. To date, Council has received several questions from the public. Responses to those questions will be posted on City Council’s social media accounts.
