About City Council
Dona Brady Ward 11
Councilwoman Dona Brady was sworn into office in 1999, representing West Side’s Ward 11, which includes parts of Edgewater, Cudell, West Boulevard, Jefferson and Bellaire-Puritas neighborhoods.
Councilwoman Brady has been instrumental in attracting businesses to her ward, including major retailers, Target and Giant Eagle. She has established neighborhood historic districts aimed at preserving vintage structures, including the closed Variety Theatre on Lorain Avenue near West 117th Street.
Restoring the 88-year-old theater building, which includes a block-long structure of empty apartments and storefronts, has been an ongoing goal for Councilwoman Brady who has backed the project by securing historic tax credits and various grants.
Councilwoman Brady is vice chairperson of City Council’s Utilities Committee and sits on the Finance Committee, Health and Human Services Committee and the Mayor’s Appointment Committee.
She has been relentlessly vigilant in addressing quality-of-life issues in her ward, including leading the effort to legislate hookah lounges, as well as directing constituent complaints to proper municipal departments.
Councilwoman Brady was instrumental in establishing a Sister City relationship with Fier, Albania, to encourage international trade. She was elected to the executive board of the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation in March 2014.
Prior to her election, Councilwoman Brady was an administrator in the Office of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor William D. Mason, Housing Court Administrator for Judge Raymond L. Pianka and served as the Vice-Chairwoman of the Cleveland Board of Zoning Appeals.
Councilwoman Brady earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, Cum Laude, in Urban Studies with a major in neighborhood revitalization from Cleveland State University's Levin College of Urban Affairs. She also graduated from CSU’s Leadership Academy. She was inducted into the Golden Key National Honor Society, a network of outstanding scholars.
Councilwoman Brady and her husband, Dan Brady, president of the Cuyahoga County Council, live in a centennial home in the West Boulevard area.
