Development, Planning and Sustainability

The Development, Planning and Sustainability Committee is responsible for the redevelopment of blighted areas, the rehabilitation and conservation of properties, the alleviation of the housing shortage, economic and industrial development, the land reutilization program and all matters pertaining to Cleveland's Departments of Community Development, Economic Development, Consumer Affairs and Building & Housing and Cleveland's Empowerment Zone office. The committee oversees the appropriation and expenditure of the Cleveland's Community Development Block Grants which fund programs like recreation and senior services. read more...

Finance

The Finance Committee is responsible for all financial matters of the city of Cleveland, including passing a balanced budget annually and approving all city expenditures and appropriations. In addition to weekly committee meetings, the committee conducts hearings on the general fund budget and other issues that have an impact on the financial health of the city of Cleveland. The Finance Committee oversees and approves all fiscal matters relating to city departments, primarily Finance, Law and Personnel. read more...

Health & Human Services

The Health & Human Services Committee handles all matters relating to public health, public charities, work relief, city correctional institutions and city charitable organizations, including sanitation, unemployment, air pollution control, lake and river pollution and nuisances. The city's departments of Health and Welfare, Human Resources and Aging report to the Health & Human Services Committee. read more...

Mayor’s Appointment Committee

The Mayor’s Appointment Committee considers appointments by the Mayor to various boards and commissions that require approval by Council (such as, but not limited to, City Planning Commission, Community Relations Board, Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority board, Regional Transit Authority board); some appointments by the Mayor do not require Council approval. The Committee reports it recommendation to the full Council for a vote on approval of the appointment. read more...

Municipal Services and Properties

The Municipal Services and Properties Committee is responsible for all matters pertaining to public parks, places, buildings, playgrounds and beaches and public recreation. In addition, it handles the sale and purchase of all city-owned properties not referred to the Community and Economic Development Committee. read more...

Operations

The Operations Committee, along with the Clerk of Council, to considers personnel and operational issues of Council, such as staffing levels, hiring of staff, and technical and operational matters pertaining to the offices of Council. read more...

Rules

The Rules Committee considers appointments by the Mayor to various boards and commissions that require approval by Council (such as, but not limited to, City Planning Commission, Community Relations Board, Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority board, Regional Transit Authority board); some appointments by the Mayor do not require Council approval. Safety

The Safety Committee is responsible for the oversight of the Cleveland Police and Fire Departments, the Emergency Medical Service and the Boxing and Wrestling Commission. In addition, it oversees the enforcement of Cleveland's traffic code, off-street parking issues, and building inspections, and all matters related to the city's Department of Public Safety. read more...

Transportation

The Transportation Committee handles all matters relating to the city-owned airports, aviation, bridges, harbors and river and lake travel, as well as public transportation and limousine and taxi operations. In addition, it oversees the Department of Port Control, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority and the Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority. read more...

Utilities

The Utilities Committee is responsible for all matters related to Cleveland's water supply, sewage disposal, the municipal electrical light plant, telecommunications, public utility rates, railway and railroad operations, and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. This committee handles all issues pertaining to the city's Department of Public Utilities. read more...

Workforce and Community Benefits

The Workforce and Community Benefits Committee is responsible for the formulation and the monitoring of job participation policies for publicly-funded development projects, the oversight of affirmative action policies, the certification of minority-and female-owned businesses, and oversight of contract compliance with city affirmative action goals. In addition, it is responsible for developing job training policies and the performance evaluation of job training contracts. This committee oversees the city's Workforce Investment Act job training programs. read more...
