STATEMENT REGARDING RECALL FROM THE OFFICE OF THE COUNCIL

The City Charter provides the citizens of Cleveland with a process for seeking the removal of elected officials. Cleveland City Council held a special meeting today to accept a recall petition certified sufficient by the Clerk of Council and to set the December 18, 2007 date for the recall election. In conducting this meeting, Cleveland City Council is following the guidelines of the City of Cleveland Charter and will continue to do so throughout the remainder of the recall process.
“This Council has a deep respect for the Democratic process. However, part of that process is making decisions that are in the best interests of the City of Cleveland,” Council President Martin J. Sweeney. “A recall is an attack, not only on our colleague, Councilman Joe Santiago, but on this entire body and on the City of Cleveland. It distracts us from focusing on the health of the City and fragments the community. We have been attacked and we will not back away from a fight.”
