Council introduces legislation moving East Cleveland water sharing agreement forward

Cleveland City Council will introduce legislation at the Council Meeting tonight, Monday, September 24, 2007, to enter into a water service agreement with the City of East Cleveland which will transition East Cleveland from a master meter customer to a direct service customer of Cleveland's Water Department.

Last year, Cleveland City Council conducted a comprehensive review of the water rate increase structure and cooperative agreements proposed by the Administration and passed legislation that was altered from the original proposal to best meet the needs of the residents of Cleveland and surrounding suburbs.

By shifting from being a master meter community to a direct service community, East Cleveland will turn over administration of the metering system and infrastructure maintenance to the City of Cleveland.  In return, East Cleveland will agree to increased regional cooperation.

"This piece of legislation represents another example of the City of Cleveland's commitment to regional cooperation," said Councilman Matt Zone, Chair of the Public Utilities Committee.  "The cooperation of Cleveland and our suburban partners benefits all of Northeast Ohio."
