Cleveland City Council to tour AMPO Bellview Hydro Electric Plant

WHO: Cleveland City Council’s Public Utilities Committee

WHAT: A tour of the two unit, 42 MW, 260,000 MWhr a year hydro electric American Metropolitan Planning Organization (AMPO) Bellview Plant

WHEN: Thursday, October 2, 2008

WHERE: on the Ohio River in Parkersview, West Virginia

WHY:      The Public Utilities Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Matt Zone, has been focusing its efforts on ensuring the success of Cleveland Public Power (CPP) by monitoring and, when necessary, modifying CPP’s long and short term plans.  An essential ingredient to the success of CPP is the diversification of the utility’s portfolio with a consideration of new and efficient forms of power.

Last year, the Public Utilities Committee approved legislation that gave CPP the ability to participate in three AMPO hyro projects.  The tour of the AMPO Bellview Plant will give Members of the Committee a greater understanding of the possibilities and implications associated with a hyrdo plant of this scope.  Furthermore, it will better prepare the Members for future deliberations on this and other forms of “new,” sustainable power as part of the CPP portfolio.

The AMPO Bellview Plant is a 9 year old facility that is relatively new and similar in appearance and make-up to the projects that CPP joined last year with AMPO.  It is also similar to the new Meldah project that AMPO will add this fall in cooperation with the City of Hamilton.
