Councilman Conwell appointed to the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood

Councilman Conwell, Ward 9, has been appointed to the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood by Governor Ted Strickland.

The Ohio Fatherhood Commission has a recommended $2 million budget to fund fatherhood training and programming throughout the State of Ohio.  The agency deals with several public policy issues affecting the lives of fathers and families that fall into the following categories: child support; job training and employment; welfare reform; fathers, families and professional support; and incarceration and reentry.

Councilman Conwell, National Father of the Year in 2001, is a strong advocate of programs and activities that encourage strong families.  He was instrumental in the original development of Cuyahoga County’s Fatherhood Initiative, currently run by Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones.  The Councilman also currently runs a free support group, Men Who Are Fathers, that offers peer support, anger management, job placement services, career development, a chance at community involvement and other opportunities.

“Support for fatherhood and parenting is essential to the future growth and stability of our communities,” said Councilman Conwell.  “Not only do families benefit from strong, responsible fatherhood, but the entire community is spiritually and economically uplifted when parents are capable and empowered.”
