City Council introduces resolution in support of State Children's Health Insurance Program

Council Members Kevin Conwell, Joe Santiago and Council President Martin J. Sweeney will introduce a resolution asking Congress to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) at the Cleveland City Council Meeting on January 22, 2007 at 7 pm.

SCHIP, enacted in 1997, provides critical health insurance coverage for over 6 million children under the age of 19 whose family income levels are too high to qualify for Medicaid, but too low for these families to afford private health care coverage.

“Continuing the SCHIP program is very important for many children in our communities,” said Councilman Santiago. “This program helps fill the gaps and connects millions of kids to healthcare.”

If adequate funding is located, the program can be expanded to additional populations in need of healthcare coverage.

“We are so pleased that the Cleveland City Council is supporting this initiative,” said Avroy Fanaroff, MD, chairman of pediatrics, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. “SCHIP is of critical importance to Rainbow, as it is so significant to our patients and families. Children’s health care is an issue we all need to make sure is adequately provided for in the coming years, and again, we appreciate this resolution from City Council.”
