Old Brooklyn Neighborhood Serve-a-Thon
 
 
Ward 16 Councilman Kevin J. Kelley, in conjunction with City Year Cleveland, the Cleveland Bar Association and the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation, will be hosting an Old Brooklyn Community Serve-a-Thon on May 12, 2007 from 8 am to 2 pm. 

"Working with these organizations to beautify the neighborhood through a series of service projects is a great opportunity," said Councilman Kelley.   "I look forward to being able to see the visible results of this community effort." 

After registration and an opening ceremony at Estabrook Recreation Center, 4125 Fulton Avenue , members of City Year Cleveland, the Cleveland Bar Association and the Old Brooklyn Development Corporation, along with more than 400 volunteers, will spread out across the Old Brooklyn Neighborhood and tackle several service projects, including:  

1.     Neighborhood Beautification (150 volunteers): General clean-up and graffiti removal within the main thoroughfares of Pearl Rd, Broadview Rd, Memphis Ave, and State Rd

2.     Crestview Apartments/CMHA Beautification (60 volunteers): Grounds clean-up, planting of flower beds, creation of a mural, and the cultivation of gardens

3.     River Sweep (60 volunteers): Properly identifying and removing invasive plants and performing general clean-up

4.     Senior Assistance (75 volunteers): Assisting seniors within Ward 16 with the maintenance of their home by mowing lawns, providing yard maintenance, and painting trim on the outside of their homes

5.     City Fresh/Art House (20 volunteers): Participating in the cultivation of a community garden that works toward improving access to fresh locally grown food for urban residents

6.     Quilting Bee (5-10 volunteers): Facilitating and participating in the creation of a quilt project incorporating seniors, youth and other community members

7.     Spring Cleaning (20-30 volunteers): Assisting elderly residents on Marvin Ave clean out their garages and porches

8.     Free Advice and Referral Legal Clinic: Legal Aid will present a brief legal advice clinic for seniors at Deaconess until noon

9.     Free Public Law-related Education Programs : Volunteers will cover topics of general legal interest for adults of all ages at Estabrook Center until 2:00pm 

Participants in the Old Brooklyn Serve-a-Thon will meet back at Estabrook Recreation Center at 1:30 pm for a lunch and closing ceremony.
