Council's Community and Economic Development Committee hears legislation for anti-predatory lending and foreclosure prevention assistance and
strategic community redevelopment

Cleveland City Council's Community and Economic Development Committee will continue to work to Break the Cycle of Vacancy and Abandonment by reviewing two pieces of legislation that address predatory lending, foreclosure and strategic redevelopment on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 9:30 am.

Ordinance 693-07 appropriates Community Development Block Grant funds for anti-predatory lending and foreclosure prevention assistance efforts.

Ordinance 694-07 appropriates Community Development Block Grant funds for strategic acquisition, redevelopment and rehabilitation of land as well as vacant and abandoned, boarded structures in the City of Cleveland.

"The problems the City is facing arising from predatory lending and foreclosure are multi-faceted, widespread and harmful to the quality of life of Clevelanders," said Councilwoman Sabra Pierce Scott, Chair of the Community and Economic Development Committee.   "By approaching the issue holistically, Council is working to address these problems at every level."

Beginning in January 2006, Council has focused on the presence of vacant and abandoned properties in the City of Cleveland in an effort to improve the quality of life for Cleveland residents by reducing the negative social and economic impacts of these properties, such as decreased safety, lower property values and the overall decay of neighborhoods.

Council has focused its efforts on Breaking the Cycle of Vacancy and Abandonment and is taking a four step, holistic approach to this process, addressing Detection, Prevention, Maintenance and Blight Elimination, and Redevelopment.   Each and every Cleveland neighborhood is affected by the problem of vacant and abandoned properties.  Cleveland City Council is committed to working toward a solution that addresses the needs of the residents of these neighborhoods and makes Cleveland a place people choose to live, work, learn and play.
