Council President Sweeney returns from Argentina and Uruguay,
where he served as the escort for The American Council of Young Political Leaders delegation

Council President Martin J. Sweeney had the honor to be selected as an escort for The American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) that traveled to Argentina and Uruguay during the first two weeks in June.

ACYPL chooses United States delegates from a pool of local, state and national government sector nominees to participate in an intensive two-week study program that exposes delegates to the government, society and industry of the region they visit.   Delegates engage in candid dialogue with senior government and political officials, industry executives and community leaders on a range of political, cultural and economic issues.

The itinerary for the ACYPL delegation that traveled to Argentina and Uruguay in June included meetings with the US Department of State, the Embassies of Argentina and Uruguay, Uruguay's Maldonado State Government, the major political parties of Argentina and Uruguay, the main exporting firms of Uruguay, the General Assembly and Federal Ministers of Uruguay, Uruguay's Colonia del Sacramento State Government and the state's local companies, Argentina's Tucuman State Government, Argentina's Santiago del Estero State Government, Argentina's political parties, Argentina's Federal Government and Argentina's presidential candidate.

The delegation also toured Punta del Este, Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay and Tucuman in Argentina .

"The tours of the regions provided us with an opportunity to connect with people and get a glimpse into everyday life in Argentina and Uruguay," said Council President Sweeney.  "We found that the social ills of these countries are the same as our own – healthcare, poverty, the shrinking middle class, jobs – and that pulled us closer together, giving us a better understanding of one another."

As an escort, the Council President was responsible for leading the group; serving as the primary liaison between the delegates, the host organization and ACYPL; addressing any logistical, political or personal problems that arose; money and schedule management; collecting contacts and press clippings; securing feedback from the delegation and providing feedback to ACYPL.

The mission of ACYPL is to promote understanding and cultivate lasting political, economic and cultural relationships among young political leaders and policy makers worldwide through the regular exchange of delegations, educational forums, leadership training and ongoing dialogue.   For more information on ACYPL, visit www.acypl.org.
