Councilman Conwell Introduces Resolution Encouraging Schools to Ban Trans-Fats

Councilman Kevin Conwell will introduce a resolution encouraging the City of Cleveland’s School District to ban artificial trans-fats from being served inside the City’s public schools on Monday, January 8, 2007 at the special Council Meeting at 4 pm.
“There is ample evidence that trans-fat in our foods contributes to heart attacks, strokes, obesity and a myriad of other problems in people of all ages,” said Councilman Conwell. “It is the responsibility of Cleveland City Council to nurture and protect the students in our City’s schools and this is a simple way to help these students avoid health problems.”
Trans-fat has been found to be a contributing factor to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Students with this disorder often can’t concentrate, resulting in poor grades and a higher probability of dropping out of school.
Consumption of trans-fats has also been linked to childhood asthma, an increase in total cholesterol, a decrease in “good” cholesterol and an increase in “bad” cholesterol, a weakening of the immune system and increased risk of diabetes, hormone imbalances, insulin resistance, cancer and obesity.
“Trans-fats are a real threat to our health and well-being,” said Councilman Conwell. “We need to better educate the public about the benefits of a healthy diet.”
