First meeting of the City of Cleveland Charter Review Commission

The Charter Review Commission, appointed by Cleveland City Council, will hold its first meeting on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 8:30 am in Council Chambers.  This first meeting will serve to acquaint members with what lies ahead and to establish operations.  This is an open meeting.  Media availability will directly follow the completion of business.

The Charter Review Commission will undertake a thorough review of the City of Cleveland Charter, which serves as Cleveland’s operating document.  The Charter Review process, which must occur every 20 years, is an opportunity to streamline outdated codes and procedures and to take a close look at they way the City operates.  Cleveland City Council intends to take this opportunity to facilitate a thorough review of the Charter and recommend that voters approve changes that will make the City of Cleveland’s operations more efficient and effective.

The Commission is required to present a report to the Council by the end of July.  Council must the review and approve any recommendations for amendments to the City Charter.  All approved amendments will be placed on the November ballot to be voted upon by the residents of the City of Cleveland.
