Councilwoman Nina Turner, Ward 1 and John F. Kennedy High School, along with their community partners will launch the Academic Achievement Program at the high school on Saturday, January 27, 2007 between 10 am and 2 pm.
The featured speaker at the John F. Kennedy High School Complex, 17100 Harvard Avenue, will be Todd Zoellick, US Department of Education. “This is the type of initiative that we are looking for,” said Zoellick, who was appointed by President George W. Bush in November of 2005. “Cleveland is well on its way in becoming the premier school district that CEO Eugene Sanders is calling it to be.”
The Academic Achievement Program is designed to help the high school prepare 95% of its 10th grade class for the Ohio Graduation Test, increase the number of students that pass all parts of this test, increase the school’s graduation rate and bring the school’s attendance rate up to 95%.
“This community already has a number of good people and resources in it. We must work together if we are going to make a difference,” said Charita Crockrom, Campus Administrator at John F. Kennedy High School. Crockrom was inspired by a speech given at the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center by Cleveland Schools CEO Eugene Sanders in which he urged stakeholders to become more involved in our children’s education.
Program sponsors hope that this program will generate synergy between community involvement and academic achievement at John F. Kennedy High School. “Cleveland’s children are our biggest hope for the future,” said Councilwoman Turner. “This program is designed to bring the students at John F. Kennedy High School a little closer to success. I hope that programs like this will spring up in all of Cleveland’s high schools.” |
