Council to hold hearing on Inner-belt Bridge

Cleveland City Council’s City Planning, Aviation & Transportation, Public Service and Public Safety Committees will hold a joint hearing to discuss the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Inner-belt bridge project on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 10 am in Council’s Committee Room (217).

Council Members have a series of questions they want ODOT District 12 Deputy Director Bonita G. Teeuwen.  Council wants to know the status of the project as it begins from the Metro Health curve to E. 72nd Street on the eastern Shoreway, including a full description of the work that has already taken place such as treatment of bulkheads below the bridge and action steps taken by ODOT to keep the bridge open and safe.

Council feels it is important to discuss what current safety concerns regarding the bridge are, including those surrounding Fire and EMS response on the bridge.

Furthermore, Council Members are asking for an explanation of the alternative options ODOT is considering for the project; the timeline for completion and the estimated cost; planning detour routes during construction; a breakdown of the economic impact upon Cleveland should closure of the Innerbelt bridge be necessary and ways to minimize negative impact on the neighborhoods surrounding the bridge.

“We are looking forward to getting answers from ODOT to a long list of questions,” said Councilman Joe Cimperman, Chair of the City Planning Committee.  “We understand that this project is part of the Federal stimulus package wish list and that it must move forward but, at the same time, it is essential that ten years of planning are a part of the final outcome.”
