Councilman Reed sponsors ordinance to toughen marijuana possession law

Councilman Zack Reed, Ward 3, has sponsored legislation to toughen Cleveland’s of law regarding the possession of marijuana.  The new ordinance will be introduced at this evening’s Cleveland City Council Meeting.

Councilman Reed proposed to increase the penalty for possession of less than 100 grams of marijuana.  Currently, anyone caught with less than 100 grams of the illegal substance is charged with a minor misdemeanor, which is a ticketable offense.  Under the new law, anyone in possession of less than 100 grams of marijuana will be charge with a misdemeanor of the fourth degree, which is punishable by a maximum of three days in jail and a $100 fine.

“Increased penalities for possession of smaller amounts of marijuana will help the City more effectively deal with the drug problem on our streets,” said Councilman Reed.  “This is a small step towards cleaning up Cleveland and making a better city for the residents to live in.”

The new law also requires the Department of Public Safety to report data to the City of Cleveland, including the number of arrests made under the new provisions of the law so that Cleveland City Council can measure the impact of the increased penalty.
