Councilman Santiago honored as 2008 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan

Cleveland City Council is proud to announce Ward 14 Councilman Joe Santiago has been chosen as Cleveland’s 2008 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan by the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs (OCHLA).  He will be recognized at an Award Gala on Friday, April 18th, 2008 at 6:30pm at the Renaissance Hotel in Downtown Columbus.

“I am proud and grateful to the OCHLA for awarding me as Cleveland’s Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan of 2008,” said Councilman Joe Santiago.  “It is such an honor to receive this distinction.  I would also like to congratulate all of the other recipients for their work in the Hispanic community.”

The Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan award is presented to individuals of Hispanic or Latino ancestry who have been active within the community and whose contributions are above and beyond one’s jobs and obligations.  Among other qualifications, recipients are chosen by their leadership qualities, character and standing within the community along with their participation in Latino community organizations.

This year’s other awardees include Wanda Canales of Wilberforce, Maria Cruz Lucio of Findlay, Juan Jose Perez of Delaware, Sonia Troche of Toledo, Victor Leandry of Lorain, Tony Ortiz of Beavercreek, Jason Riveiro of Cincinnati, Gilbert Silva of Amherst, Guadalupe Velasquez of Columbus.

The Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs was created in 1977 with three primary purposes: to advise members of the state government about issues facing the Latino community, to connect the diverse Latino communities across Ohio, and to build and enhance the capacity of private sector community organizations and agencies in their service to the Latino community across the state.
