Eugene R. Miller Biography

Ward 10

Cleveland City Councilman Eugene R. Miller brings a rare breed of dedication to his work in Ward 10. Councilman Miller won his seat in November 2009 after being sworn in to complete the unexpired term of Councilman Roosevelt Coats and is ready to get to work.

Councilman Miller knows the value of hard work and sacrifice. He became a custodial single parent at age 18, and he learned quickly how to juggle his responsibilities as a student, a professional and a father. After earning his GED at the age of 18, Councilman Miller worked his way through Baldwin-Wallace College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in sociology.  He is also working on an MBA from Tiffin University.

It was a long road to Cleveland City Council.  He has overcome many obstacles to obtain a quality education.  He survived failures in his entrepreneur endeavors.  He struggled as a single father to raise his young daughter.  He’s suffered some of the same hardships that many young people in their early 20’s are dealing with today. His life changed in 1995 when he obtained his GED and it gave him the hope that he would one day become a professional and a productive member of society.

His foray into public service comes from a deep desire to help people and provide opportunity for his constituents. He served as campaign manager in two judicial campaigns, and he was a field manager in the 2005 campaign of Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson.

He recently stepped down from his position as State Representative for the 10th District of the Ohio House of Representatives.  In this position, Councilman Miller served as Chair of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee and Vice Chair of the Housing Urban Revitalization Committee. He also served as a member of the Criminal Justice Committee and the Financial Institutions, Real Estate and Securities Committee and was Chair of the House and Senate Cancer Caucus.  During his last 5 months in office, he introduced 11 bills and succeeded in getting several provisions inserted into the House version of the biennium operating budget.

Councilman Miller plans to use the resources in his district, the City of Cleveland and the state in an effort to serve the residents of Ward 10. His priorities include ensuring the public safety of his residents and working to increase the amount of economic development in the neighborhoods.

Councilman Miller has learned how to build bridges between people with opposing ideas. He has found that simply listening is an effective form of education. Equally as important, Miller has learned the power of hope. In times of hardship, hope brings opportunity.  Councilman Miller’s ultimate goal is to bring that hope and optimism home, helping Cleveland realize its potential as one of America’s great cities.
