Residents who rely on the Ohio Direction Card for their monthly grocery needs will soon have new, healthier options for their shopping - local Cleveland farmers’ markets.  The City of Cleveland, in collaboration with the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and area farmers’ markets, and with the support of The George Gund Foundation will launch the Ohio Direction Card EBT incentive pilot program.  The program will allow Ohio Direction Card holders to use their cards at four area farmers’ markets and receive an extra five dollars to spend at the market.

Pleasant community will again host an event that caters to everyone in Cleveland offering free, national entertainment acts and access to community resources with the 7th annual Family Unity Day in the Park.

In an effort to promote amicable relations among Cleveland’s diverse racial and cultural groups, the city will host the 2nd annual Voices Against Violence Concert on June 26.  This event will draw one church choir from each Cleveland Police District to showcase the amazing talents within the city while standing up against violence.

Recent crime in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood has many residents and patrons on edge about the safety of the popular community.  Ward 3 Councilman Joe Cimperman will host a community safety meeting on June 21 to address recent issues of violent crime and theft.

Cleveland native, comedian and TV personality Drew Carey recently produced a series of provocative online videos with the Reason Foundation entitled, Reason Saves Cleveland with Drew Carey, in which they outline a number of steps the city should carry out to reverse loss of funding, business and industry, and population.  Carey and Reason.tv editor-in-chief, Nick Gillispie, will present their views face-to-face with Cleveland City Council during a forum on May 27, 2010.

Cleveland City Councilman Terrell Pruitt has organized the E. 177th Street and Federal Avenue Explosion Relief Fund to benefit residents who are working to rebuild their homes and lives.  The councilman and Ward 1 community leaders will announce the details of the fund, its first fundraising event, and additional resources available to the community at a press conference on Monday, May 24.

Cleveland today launched a program to help provide residents with some relief from the high cost of prescription drugs. The city is making free prescription drug discount cards available to city residents through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities (NLC).

Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed along with several other city council members, State Senator Shirley Smith, East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton and members of the Cleveland Teachers Union will unite on the steps of Cleveland City Hall this evening and urge our representatives in Washington, D.C. to pass HB 4812 and SB 3206.  This legislation would provide $23 billion dollars to states and local government to avoid layoffs of teachers and other educational support staff.
